What Does it Take to Build a Book of Business?

There is no doubt about it. For lawyers, business is a necessary key to success. It means independence, autonomy and, even more importantly, security in these uncertain times. According to the golden rule, the one that has the gold makes the rules. While that credo rings just as true for guys and women, female attorneys have traditionally had a tricky time attracting a robust stable of clients. These days successful, client-laden female attorneys are hardly an endangered species. That told, the legal profession could certainly use some more.

Become An Expert

One proven strategy for success is to develop an expertise. In other words, become the “go-to” in your field. This bit of advice is personified by Katherine Keefe, a big health care lawyer who dispenses advice to hospitals and health care providers on a daily basis. For Keefe, the story began in law school, when she took a part-time career opportunity in the legal department of a big Philadelphia hospital. She quickly realized that health care was a great fit and one that she has subsequently built her career around. It should come as no surprise then that with the state of health care and health care law in constant flux, Keefe’s skills are in regular demand.

Keefe honed her expertise as an in-house lawyer at major managed care providers and then made the transition to law firm life, taking with her a healthy book of business. “Health care presents constant challenges,” explained Keefe, which means she is always tracking the latest changes in what is already a highly complex field. When it comes to further enhancing her reputation, Keefe said she hits the speaking circuit and tries to “put herself out there” as a credible source to help potential clients navigate an ever-shifting landscape.    More

Foundation Christian Academy (FCA) is hosting its 3rd Annual Benefit Dinner on Thursday, May 17th, 2012 at the Sloan Convention Center. GLI and Nancy Grimes are eager supporters of the community. Nancy Grimes was a board member for Foundation Christian Academy for a number of years. Guest speaker for the event is Col. Oliver North. GLI/Grimes Legal, Inc. is one of the sponsors for the event.

Oliver L. North is a combat decorated Marine, #1 NYT best-selling author, diminutive business founder, inventor with multiple U.S. patents, columnist, and the host of War Stories on the Fox News Channel. Yet, he claims his most important accomplishment is to be the husband of one, the father of four and the grandfather of thirteen.

North was born in San Antonio, Texas, graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland, and served 22 years as a U.S. Marine. His awards for service in combat include the silver star, the bronze star for valor and 2 purple hearts for wounds in combat.

Assigned to the National Security Council Staff in the Reagan administration, Lieutenant Colonel North was the United States government’s counter-terrorism coordinator from 1983-1986. He was involved in planning the rescue of 804 medical students on the Island of Grenada and played a major role in the daring capture of the hijackers of the cruise ship Achille Lauro. After assisting with plans for the U.S. raid on Muammar Qaddafi’s terrorist bases in Libya, North was targeted for assassination by Abu Nidal, the infamous terrorist found dead in Baghdad in August, 2002. President Ronald Reagan described him as “an American hero.”

Since 2001, North has been the host of War Stories, the award-winning military documentary series on Fox News Channel. He has also authored twelve books - all of ‘em New York Times bestsellers. His latest book, American Heroes, based on his extensive coverage of U.S. military units engaged in Afghanistan, Iraq and the Philippines was released in May 2008 and is yet another New York Times Best-Selling Book.

North is a life member of the National Rifle Association and serves on the NRA board of directors. He is also the founder of Freedom Alliance, a foundation that provides college scholarships for the sons and daughters of service members killed in action.
